2009 DOXA Documentary Film Festival and Exposed: Celebrity Camera Auction

Posted May 25, 2009 by kk

Vancouver has some really amazing events that happen yearly. One of them is the DOXA Documentary Film Festival , presented by the Documentary Media Society . Every year the DMS rallies together some of the best independent documentaries of the year from filmmakers all around the world and presents them to a local audience with an impressive curated schedule . The entire festival is juried and has additional elements of artist talks , public forums and special events.

One of the special events at the 2009 DOXA festival this year was a specially designed fundraiser for the continuation of film festival. Curated as a celebrity camera auction entitled Exposed , this fundraiser put a fun spin on auctions for unseen art. Each celebrity was given a single-use disposable camera and each undeveloped camera is auctioned off, with the proceeds going to DMS for the DOXA festival. Kris was one the chosen celebrities for the camera auction which was really awesome and his camera was thrown in with a bunch of other amazing talented celebrities from all walks of life. Additional cameras were shot punkrocker Andrew W.K. , actor Jennifer Beals from the L Word , Ze Frank, musician Tegan Quin from Tegan and Sara , actor Martin Sheen , George Stroumboulopoulos from The Hour , musician Randy Bachman from The Guess Who , actor Michael Hogan from BSG , Peter Mansbridge from The National , Nardwuar the Human Serviette , actor Tahmoh Penikett from BSG and the band the Weakerthans . There were 52 celebrity photographers in all. Quite a selection. :)

This years film festival opened on Friday May 22 with the opening night film called Inside Hana's Suitcase plus an afterparty at The Vancouver Art Gallery catered with eats from Subeez and drinks from Storm Brewing and Peller Estate's fine wines . Special treats at the after party were music by Aliqua and Phontaine plus the Rembrandt/Vermeer exhibit was open to all of the party attendees.

Exposed: Celebrity Camera Auction opened with its initial bidding on the opening night May 22 and will officially close in May 31. The bidding has already started with a $760 dollar bid placed on Tegan Quin's camera and a $7,000 dollar bid placed on Jennifer Beals' camera. Who knows what everyone shot on their cameras, espcially Kris, but you can find out if you bid and win one. Secret art for a great cause.
