Many organizations have come from all over the world to participate in the World People's Conference for Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Some of these organizations are small or have just sent part of their delegation while one particular group has a very strong physical presence at the conference. Noted by their large green flags, green hats and green scarves, La Via Campesina is an international organization that fights for the rights of peasant farmers. Their work on an international level has set the terms for the defining right of food sovereignty.
La Via Campesina is a coalition of 148 organizations that spans across 69 countries. Actively they organize small and medium farming communities including the landless and migrant farmers. In 1996 this international movement launched the concept of food sovereignty which created defining food production in a community as a human right. There are seven principles to food sovereignty: food as a basic human right, agrarian reform, protecting natural resources, reorganizing food trade, ending the globalization of hunger, social peace and democratic control.
April 17 is a international recognized day in honor of the struggle of the peasant communities. La Via Campesina had over 100 events scheduled all over the world on this day. In Cochabamba an event was organized in the central plaza of the city and was attended by the local communities.
Static Photography had the opportunity to meet the group of La Via Campesina that had gathered for the World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth. Photographer Kris Krüg had the chance to photograph their organizing meeting before the conference.

This large meeting was held at the Hotel Centro Palestra in Cochabamba. Over 40 attendees were present from multiple countries.
La Via Campesina are often adorned by their green scarves, green hats and green flags.
At the meeting there was a small session of name placards exchanged in order to introduce the large group to each other.
Nicaraguan Catholic priest Miguel D'Escoto addresses the large meeting. Miguel is the former President of Assembly of the United Nations.

Aside from some chanting the room was quiet as the coalition that gather listened to what was to come in the next few days at the World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth.

The room had a strong sense of familiarity as though most of the members were from far places, their hearts were all fighting for the same human rights.

La Via Campesina is an amazing organization with the strength of large numbers and the passion for farmers' rights. It was a great experience to meet and photograph them in Bolivia. Hopefully we will be seeing more of La Via Campesina in the next week in Cochabamba.

I know this wasn't the point with this post but those are some truly amazing photos. What kind of camera might that be? Personally I use a Nikdon D70s but thanks to the need of new träningsredskap I've not been able to buy a new one.

I have some friend from Bolivia who went to the International Farmer & Peasant's Rights Coalition . They said it was a very interessting event and that they met many interessting people. They also have 2 wellnesshotels there and said that these hotels were very crowded during that time of the conference.
